Not automatically. Philippine bachelor's graduates do have the easier pathway into a New Zealand master's program, but you don't strictly need a bachelor's degree to be admitted โ€” what matters is whether your background (qualifications or work experience) connects logically to the course you want to take.

When a bachelor's degree isn't required

New Zealand universities recognise substantial work experience through a process called Recognition of Prior Learning โ€” sometimes called Special Admission. If the school can see that an applicant has effectively covered the essential material of a bachelor's degree through their career, they can offer them a place in a master's program directly.

A common example is IT. An applicant who isn't a bachelor's graduate but has extensive IT work experience can be admitted on the strength of that experience alone.

Why the course you choose still matters

Immigration New Zealand approves student visas for what they call a "genuine student" โ€” meaning the course has to make sense as the next step in your career. The qualification you pick has to follow logically from either your bachelor's degree or your previous work experience.

Either of these connections will satisfy the logical-pathway test:

  • The master's is closely relevant to the bachelor's degree you've already completed.
  • The master's is closely relevant to your current or previous work experience.

Either the qualification or the relevant work experience can carry the application โ€” but the connection between your background and your chosen course is what Immigration New Zealand is actually looking for.
